Botulinum toxin injections in Bruges

Botulinum toxin has been used in aesthetic and therapeutic medicine for several decades.

Administered through local, targeted micro-injections, it temporarily relaxes the treated muscles and reduces their ability to contract. Depending on the area and indication, it can soften expression lines, reduce excessive sweating or relieve symptoms related to bruxism and teeth grinding.

In our aesthetic medicine practice in Bruges, every treatment begins with a consultation. During this appointment, the doctor assesses your needs, explains the protocol and answers all your questions so that you can make an informed decision.

The injections are generally well tolerated, leave no lasting visible marks and do not require anaesthesia. Mild redness at the injection points usually disappears within an hour and can be covered with make-up if desired. No time off work is required.

Wrinkle treatment with botulinum toxin injections

Expression lines on the forehead, crow’s feet and frown lines result from repeated contraction of the facial muscles. Botulinum toxin reduces these expression lines by temporarily slowing the activity of these muscles.

Wrinkles gradually soften after treatment. The first effects are usually visible between three and five days after injection. Results generally last between three and six months. A minimum interval of three months between two sessions is recommended.

Treatment of excessive sweating

Hyperhidrosis is sweating that exceeds the body’s normal needs for temperature regulation. The areas most commonly affected are the underarms, palms of the hands and soles of the feet.

Botulinum toxin injections act against excessive sweating by temporarily blocking the activity of the sweat glands in the treated area. Clinical studies report a reduction in sweating of around 87% one week after injection. The effect is optimal after two weeks and lasts between six and nine months. The treatment can be repeated after this period if needed.

Treatment of bruxism with botulinum toxin

Bruxism, also known as teeth grinding or jaw clenching, is the involuntary clenching or grinding of the teeth, most often at night. It can cause pain in the jaw muscles, morning headaches, tooth sensitivity and premature wear of the dental enamel.

When conventional solutions are not enough, treatment with botulinum toxin for bruxism may be considered. The injections are placed precisely into the masseter muscle, the powerful chewing muscle at the side of the jaw. They temporarily reduce excessive muscle strength without affecting normal speech or chewing.

The first effects of Botox for bruxism are usually felt within a few days and are optimal around the tenth day. Results generally last four to six months. If symptoms return, maintenance injections may be recommended roughly every six months.

Injections d’acide hyaluronique

Hyaluronic acid is a molecule naturally present in the dermis. It retains water and helps maintain skin volume and firmness. Its production decreases with age, leading to gradual tissue laxity and deeper wrinkles.

Hyaluronic acid-based fillers can be used to restore lost volume.

  • Cheekbones: volume restoration, with an indirect effect on nasolabial folds and the facial oval.
  • Hollow temples: filling of temporal hollows. Results last around one year in this area, which is subject to little muscular movement.
  • Tear trough: filling of the groove between the inner corner of the eye and the cheek, which can create a tired-looking appearance.
  • Lips and mouth corners: lip volume enhancement, definition of the lip border and correction of downturned corners of the mouth.
  • Nasolabial fold: softening of the fold between the nose and the upper lip.
Facial oval and chin: redefinition of contours and correction of a receding chin.

Results last on average ten to twelve months, depending on the treated areas. Mild redness or swelling may occur after the injections and usually disappears within two to three days.
