Home Eyelid correction

Men and women choose blepharoplasty to improve the way they look. With aging, our skin loses its elasticity. This causes excessive skin or an extra fold on the the upper eyelids and wrinkles and bulges on the lower eyelids.

Droopy eyelids can make you look older and can also impede your vision. Bags under the eyes can give you a tired look. Blepharoplasty surgery can help you to correct these problems.

This surgery cannot help you with dark circles, fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes. Your surgeon may recommend other procedures such as filler injections or botox to achieve the best results.

With a blepharoplasty, the eyelids heal very quickly and scars are usually quite invisible.

Who can have eyelid surgery ?

Normally surgery can be done as from 35 years or older and if you are in good health and have realistic expectations.

Eyelid correction does not change your facial structure. So it is recommended to discuss your expectations with your surgeon during a first consultation.

The surgery and aftercare

Your surgeon will perform the surgery under local anesthesia. And you will also get oral medication to relax during the surgery. The surgery takes about two hours if both upper and lower eyelids are done at the same time.

You need to arrange for another person to accompany you and drive you home after the surgery.

For the upper eyelids, the surgeon cuts along the natural folds of the eyelid and removes excess skin, muscle and fat. The cuts will be closed with very small stitches.

For the lower eyelid correction, the surgeon makes a cut below the eyelashes. Through that cut, excess skin, fat and loose muscle will be removed. The incision will be closed.

Stitches will be removed after five to seven days. Swelling and sometimes bruising may be expected but your eyelids should look normal within a week or two.

It is recommended to take leave and to limit your daily activities for several days after the surgey.

Please make sure to have the following at home :

  • Ice cubes
  • Ice pack
  • Pain killers (which can be prescribed by your doctor)

Discuss medication beforehand with your surgeon. Some medication such as Aspirin and Naproxen should not be taken due to the increased risk of bleeding.

For most people, results of a lower eyelid surgery may last a lifetime. Upper eyelid surgery can last at least five to ten years.
