Depending on what is the cause of bags under the eyes, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) may be an option.
As you age, bags under eyes (mild swelling, saggy or loose skin, puffiness under the eyes) appear. The tissues around your eyes and the muscles weaken and the lids appear puffy. In addition to the swelling, fluid may also accumulate under the eyes.
Several factors may cause or worsen this effect :
- Fluid retention
- Lack of sleep
- Allergies
- Smoking
- Heredity: under-eye bags can run in families
Your surgeon will discuss with you the causes of the swelling and will decide whether you are a good candidate for blepharoplasty.
Lower eyelid surgery involves removing of excess fat tissue and sagging skin under the eyes. The surgeon makes an incision below the lower eyelashes. The incision heals quickly but will at first look red and irritated. Following the eyelid surgery, your eyes will most likely feel sore and tight. Swelling around the incision is normal. To minimize the swelling, cold compresses or iced eye pads can be applied.
Your surgeon will explain possible side effects of eyelid surgery, such as dry eyes, watery eyes, pain, swelling, bruising and blurred vision. These will fade as you begin to look and feel better day by day. Bruising and swelling go away within a week or two.
The result vary from patient to patient but most are pleased with the overall change. The purpose of eyelid surgery is to improve the appearance of tired, droopy and puffy eyes.
